I.A.R.T. Fitness Clinician Mission Statement

Standard 1.1 I.A.R.T. Fitness Clinicians will have a mission statement that includes his or her general direction and is supported by specific, clearly defined objectives.

  • I will be fully accountable in regard to any exercise and nutrition prescription, discovering and knowing ‘why’ behind every recommendation I make to the best of my ability.
  • I will reason, and not rationalize, my actions.
  • I will remain an independent thinker by reviewing and weighing any evidence and proof, and establishing my own conclusions.
  • I will remain objective in my thoughts by having an active mind, not an opened or closed mind, thereby refusing to accept on the basis of blind faith and denying sterile knowledge based on false beliefs.
  • I will continue to uphold the quality standards and guidelines of the International Association of Resistance Trainers, and I will not voluntarily associate professionally with anyone who violates the standards and ethics as outlined by the I.A.R.T.
  • I will be responsible for my actions, placing the onus upon myself for both successes and failures and learning from those failures in order to enhance my knowledge as an elite fitness professional and assistant health-care provider within the industry.
  • I will optimize my clients’ programs relative to their goals, needs, and abilities while doing so in a safe manner and in a safe environment; I will refrain from standardized, generalized, and ‘canned’ programs to avoid the ‘easy way out.’
  • I will continue my education by reading I.A.R.T. materials and seeking other resources that will enhance my knowledge and ability to reason.

I will follow the I.A.R.T. Fitness Clinician and Fitness Facility Code of Ethics. I.A.R.T Fitness Clinician & Facility Code of Ethics Standard 1.2 I.A.R.T. Fitness Clinicians and their associated fitness facilities will maintain a Code of Ethics. As a member in good standing of the International Association of Resistance Trainers, I will do my utmost to:

  • Provide quality instruction to all clients.
  • Screen health, exercise and nutrition history by having all clients complete the I.A.R.T. standard questionnaire form and, if necessary, complete a pre-exercise testing and/or doctor’s physical.
  • Provide modified training programs for clients with special requirements or fitness levels.
  • Obtain specialized education for training special groups, e.g., the mentally disabled, osteoarthritis, etc.
  • Investigate, learn and incorporate valid, current research in the programs that I create.
  • Apply logic and objectivity, not emotion and subjectivity to all procedures.
  • Be knowledgeable and competent in CPR and emergency procedures while providing and maintaining a safe and effective training environment.
  • Encourage commitment to quality nutrition and fitness as a lifelong goal by following a regular exercise program and proper dietary habits.
  • Promote resistance training as a means of maintaining fitness and health.
  • Educate clients about the benefits of a healthy lifestyle and promote self-reliance when appropriate.
  • Track the progress of clients and offer assistance when needed.
  • Respect the confidentiality of my clientele, never to disclose to any person any personal information acquired by a client unless authorized, in writing, by the client, unless a risk of health or death becomes an issue.
  • Avoid sensual or sexual touching and maintain professional touching in cases of spotting, correcting technique or posture, or when conducting strength/flexibility assessment.
  • Uphold a professional image by dressing appropriately, refraining from unhealthy practices and maintaining a positive attitude.
  • Accurately represent my qualifications, avoid misleading advertising, and accept responsibility in all my actions and fitness recommendations.
  • Recommend other professionals in fields outside my expertise.
  • Respect the rights, welfare, and dignity of fellow professionals and exchange knowledge and experience for the benefit of the exercise and nutrition science industries.
  • Never discredit other fitness professionals, facilities, or organizations publicly through comment or conduct.
  • Conduct business in a manner that commands the respect of the public within this industry and for the goals in which we strive.
  • Supply sufficient information to enable consumers to make an informed decision regarding membership and/or fitness package services, and that:
  • All promotional material is truthful, accurate, and clear. I will not use misleading or false advertising or marketing procedures that mislead or misrepresent pricing, benefits, consumer needs or staff abilities, or produce sales based on fear or guilt.
  • Promotional materials do not encourage unrealistic expectations and the outcomes attainable from your services or the facility and equipment provided.
  • Misleading or make false comparisons with services offered by competitors are not made.
  • Prospective clients are allowed to inspect the premises without any obligations to purchase any services.
  • This code is made available for client and prospective client perusal.
  • Employees of the facility act ethically and professionally, and avoid any unreasonable sales methods, including harassment or coercion.
  • Maintain honesty in all business transactions through fair pricing and abiding to all contracts; and deliver what is promised through contract and otherwise.
  • Provide a high value of service to enhance customer confidence and loyalty, thus improving long-term commitment, and continue to increase the value and benefit of services and programs.
  • Maintain a high set of business standards that protects the rights and safety of the customer.
  • Participate in the teachings and promotion of the I.A.R.T. and objective fitness practices, whenever possible.
  • Remain current on theoretical and practical information within the field through continuing education activities or by reading/viewing quality information.
  • Never discriminate on the basis of sex, race, age or mental and/or physical limitations, and strive to provide equal and fair treatment to all individuals.
  • Expose irrationality that promotes potential danger or injury to individuals who do not have the expertise or knowledge to know better, and to safeguard the public by reporting violations to I.A.R.T. standards and guidelines.
  • Comply with local, state/provincial and federal laws of the land including, but not limited to, applicable business, medical, employment, and copyright law.
